Waiting for Spring

Some of you may remember from my blogs last year (here and here) that I'm an avid gardener. So, you won't be surprised to hear how much I'm looking forward to spring when I can put my 'green paws' back to work. In fact, some of my early work is already coming to fruition...

For example, my narcissi are starting to sprout...

...and my crocuses are showing some colour.

As for my snowdrops, well, they're already in full bloom.

But, I'm still not content. I somehow need to 'spice-up' my garden a little this year.

I know, why don't I invite some of my feathered friends to come and visit me?

I set to work on 'hatching-up' a plan...

First, I needed to order some 'supplies' from the RSPB (The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).

Here they all are unpacked. Man, I'd ordered enough to feed a flock of ostriches!

What a spread!

I had sunflower mix, birdcake, coconut treats, suet balls and plenty of different types of feeders to put them all in.

Before assembling it all, time for a snooze!

I eventually woke up and, after a few hours of assembling the stuff...

...voila! My bird feeding station was all set-up and ready to go!

Now, where the heck are all those birds? I waited patiently (for at least 20 seconds), then I had an idea...

...I decided to take matters into my own paws (or mouth).

"Here tweety-tweety-tweety. Come and get it!"

And, it worked!

First, a blue tit arrived...

...it was soon devouring my 'coconut treat'...

... and my suet balls.

Next, a great tit came along.

Then a robin 'on the wing'.

Here's the robin posing nicely.

Pretty soon, there were birds coming from everywhere to sample my delicious bird-buffet.

I was so proud of myself! I think I'm going to enjoy this spring.

Ciao for now - got to go bird-watching.

Hi Homer, well you should be proud of yourself. What a great idea for your garden and to encourage some beautiful birds to visit you. Thanks for the photos. Those little birds will give you something to watch while resting outside. No worries, Ciao Carol.

What a beautiful post, Homer! Mom wishes you could come here and teach Ciara that being a good gardener means leaving the plants IN the ground and not removing them:(

Hi Homer!
Your Missus is right, I had missed this post!
How can you watch birds so politely? When I see one, I scare it off!!! They normally want to eat my bread, so I have to make sure they do not get nearer!!!
You are a good boy, not a satan...
Yes, ok, you might not like certain setters we know about... but... you have a gentle heart!!!
Ciao Lucille ;)

Hey Homer,

Have you found spring yet? I can't find it here - just leaves starting to fall off the trees and the days getting cooler and shorter. I love that you are looking after your bird friends.

Sending you lots of woofs,
Riley

It's so kind of you to feed the birds, Homer, especially now as they're getting ready to start building nests and there's still not much natural food for them. They need all that good food to have healthy baby birds. AND you leave the plants in the ground.

Abby is an inveterate digger, and her strong prey drive is as dangerous to birds as it is to any other small critter she can get in her mouth. Sigh.

Well done, Homer.

nice garden! unfortunately, i'm putting off learning to garden in favor of cooking, photography (yes i think it was you that suggested it remember... finally bought some books and went to see a working photographer speak and will take some classes too), french and hopefully travel. i'm trying to fit in yoga and some cycling... and top that with juno's PT and lots of doggie exercise every day...oh and i also want to do a few dog classes for livestock training (around horses/cows etc)... with ALL that well... it's amazing that i ever had time to work! I wouldn't mind HIRING a gardener though... i sure appreciate them. just don't have the time to devote to them. :(

gorgeous garden! are you for hire? :)
